had written a poem in which a fire

figured promenintly.

The girl with the sharp, slim jaw

had written a poem in which

a fire reflected in the eyes of

her lover, it was cold. I forget

why there was a fire, if I ever

knew. She said she felt her

face heat. Her face flush. Her

face pink with blood desire as

she saw the fire reflect in his

eye. I imagined the flush my

former girlfriend got after sex

and how she never looked better

than with red rushed to her high

set cheekbones, and painted

an asymmetric triangular

swath of her chest, above her

breasts. It was

something deep within

acknowledging

what I hadn’t even for

months noticed, the

heat. The

in the poem, the

heat of a fire she

watched in reflection in

the eyes of her lover.

by the beginning of

a hairline

           strands streaking away

of long earring strands

 

of blue and red glass beads

gorgeous collar bones, I

 

imagined.
